Jingdezhen (CN), Taoxichuan Ceramic Art Avenue

new organ | II/20 (8 Ext. + 7 Tr.) | opus 1020 | 2025

Jingdezhen is considered the world capital of Chinese porcelain. On the site of former porcelain factories in the Taoxichuan district, a diverse cultural offering has been established in recent years as part of restructuring efforts. This initiative is dedicated to preserving and promoting the historical heritage of the Chinese ceramics industry. The Ceramic Art Avenue integrates tradition, fashion, art, and technology. Taoxichuan has been recognized as a national demonstration park for the cultural industry and received the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Conservation Innovation Award in 2017.

In the partially glass-roofed top floor of the new art gallery building, a concert and relaxation lounge with a café is being created, and it will feature an organ as part of its furnishings. We have been commissioned to build an instrument with 854 Pipes, designed for small-scale concert purposes.

To maximize the versatility of the limited number of stops, a special concept with individually controlled pipes is being implemented. Opposing the Principal chorus composed of individual stops are extended pipe ranks housed in a swell box, allowing for highly variable use. All stops are independently playable on both manuals. In the Pedal, the Gedackt rank, in addition to transmissions, provides an independent stop. A lockable console with stop tabs and a touch monitor is placed directly in front of the organ case.

The organ case was designed to have a representative size despite the limited number of pipes, with the façade inspired by cultural traditions rather than purely tonal considerations. Motifs from classical German organ building were incorporated, resulting in a baroque-inspired design. The façade structure is based on the historic Wender organ in Arnstadt's Bach Church, but the execution has been modernized with simplified details, such as geometrically reduced profiles. Subtle references to traditional Chinese forms are integrated into the color accents and ornamentation.

Since the organ is situated in front of a glass wall that separates the space from a visitor passage, the back of the organ case has also been designed to be visually appealing, featuring a façade made of wooden pipes from the Subbass stop.
