Organ Works

The Protestant Church of St. Michael in Schlüchtern is a simple Classical-style hall church with surrounding side galleries. The west tower dates from the 14th century, while the nave was built in 1842. In addition to its liturgical function, the church serves as a central location for church music education: the Church Music Training Center (KMF) Schlüchtern makes intensive use of the instrument for teaching, rehearsals, and concerts.

The organ was built in 1994 by the Berlin organ-building firm Karl Schuke GmbH. It has 37 stops on three manuals and pedal. From the outset, the instrument was conceptually designed for later expansion: five stops were structurally prepared but have not yet been realized. The windchests, stop action, and space for installation are already in place.

After nearly three decades of intensive use, wear, dirt, and technical aging processes now make a comprehensive overhaul necessary. The focus of the planned work is the thorough cleaning and revision of the entire organ.

A key element of the project is the tonal completion of the organ through the installation of the stops planned at the time of construction but not yet built. In the Great Organ, a Quint 2 2/3′ and a five-rank Cornet will be added. The Swell division will be complemented by two characteristic reed stops in the French style: Basson 16′ and Trumpet 8′. In the Pedal division, a Clairon 4′ will be added.

These measures not only expand the tonal palette but also close conceptual gaps in the organ’s design. The new stops will be consistently matched to the existing instrument in scale, materials, and voicing.

Measurements have shown that, particularly in the Great Organ, significant drops in wind pressure occur under heavy load. These negatively affect speech, tonal stability, and tuning. To remedy this problem, the wind system will be fundamentally revised.

In addition, the organ will undergo an extensive re-voicing process. All stops will be rebalanced in relation to one another and adjusted toward a relaxed, carrying, and vocal tonal character.

Through renovation, tonal completion, and technical safeguarding, the Karl Schuke organ of St. Michael’s Church will be preserved in the long term and brought to completion in accordance with its original concept. The instrument will thus gain renewed tonal presence and reliability—as a central tool for church music, an accompaniment for congregational singing, and a versatile concert organ.
